Florin Mitroi
(1938, Craiova, România - 2002, București, România)
'With a secluded existence, almost hollow, with a minimum lifelong exhibition attendance, Florin Mitroi was shown, after the early death, as one of the most significant, inflexible and exemplary contemporary Romanian artists.
Not by accident, he was the teacher and mentor of a compact generation of young artists in its brief professorship at the department of painting of the aRT academy in Bucharest. Symptomatic, either before of after his activity as a professor, there has never been another strong contingent of students and future artists.
This shows how influential and even decisive formative artistic model was Mitroi. All his students retained and developed much of the teacher's artistic idiosyncrasies: all are, first of all, deeply devoted to painting, all have technical interests and unconventional practices regarding the support and its plastic treatment (painting on wood, drawing on metal sheets and the sophisticated blends are their signature) but mostly, they all kept the thematic and emotional polarization characteristic of Florin Mitroi, his inclination towards projecting extreme images, always at the limit of excess or ecstasy, impregnated with aspiration and violence.'
