TEBA Halls Arad, Patria Street 14C
The history of this place makes from the Teba factory a symbol of glory - both military, industrial, natural or urban - of Arad, but also of its continuous identity reinvention. Situated on the side towards Timişoara, on the riverbanks of Mureş, between the Swabian neighbourhood Aradu Nou and the old town, the Teba halls cover today the spot on which, in 16th century, the Ottomans erected the first fortress of Arad.

The true heart of the city, pulsating together with its life stream, the Mureş river, the fortress and its surroundings will serve as the first urban nucleus. Reinforced by Eugeniu de Savoya and abandoned afterwards in favour of the new Vauban fortress on the loop of the river, the old fortress became a marginal location, entering this way in the so Central-European familiar game of shifting between centre and margin.

Today’s Teba halls, most of them constructed in the period following the Second World War, functioned until the first years of the 3rd millennium as one of the large textile factories of Arad, a city well known for this industry. Today in this place, located only quarter of an hour away by foot from the centre, in the vicinity of the popular promenade, the banks of Mureş, an industrial usage would be impossible. That is why, for both the city’s administration but most of all, for the young artists, the place has become interesting for a possible cultural reconversion, one that would move the Teba halls from the outskirts of an outdated industry towards the centre of the local cultural life, with regional institutional ambitions. For several months now the two halls host event after event, becoming a depository of energies and ideas that could turn this place in the most important project of cultural infrastructure in the last hundred of years of the city’s history.

Teba became an alternative approach to culture and artistic expression, and, at the same time, it is the first industrial building conversion project for cultural purposes in Arad. By revitalizing two of the old industrial halls in the former textile factory Teba, the place has become an incubator for contemporary arts - film, theater, music, architecture and design, urban art, visual arts, etc. Teba is a culture-led regeneration project implemented by the non-governmental organisation CitiZenit based in Arad, in order to stimulate the local community, to initiate creative and innovative experiments in the artistic, social and cultural field, and to promote arts, education, self-exploration and culural development.
