Helios Gallery Victoriei Square 6
Helios Gallery is located in Victoriei Square, at the ground floor of Hilt-Vogel Palace. The building was constructed between 1912 and 1913 by the architect László Székely in a sober Hungarian Art Nouveau style, being stripped of the romantic details which we see for instance on the Brück house, designed by the same architect. The palace is therefore characterized by a usually straight profile decoration and punctual vegetal decoration, strongly geometrized and harmonized with the robust shape of the building. From an urbanistic point of view, the building integrates itself in the coherent lines of the architectural ensemble of Victoriei Square, being situated on the old Corso and flanked towards the Metropolitan Orthodox cathedral by the Széchényi Palace, designed by the same architect, and towards the National Opera by the Dauerbach Palace.

In 1968, Helios Gallery is inaugurated, being the first art gallery in Timişoara. Up to that date the city didn’t had a proper exhibition place, the only place that worked as one being a small improper room at the ground floor of Banatul. Established in 1951, the Union of Artists begins to have more and more members, many artists from around the country being drawn to teach at the educational institutions in the city: the Fine Arts High School (the old art school transformed in 1957 in a high school) and the Faculty of Arts within the Pedagogic Institute established in 1960. At the same time the effervescence of the art scene of the 60s in Timişoara reinforce the need of an appropriate exhibition space; among the first ones who exhibited here were Diodor Dure, Xenia Eraclide Vreme, Iulia Dinescu, Simion Lucaciu, Ştefan Bertalan, Romul Nuţiu, Gabriel Popa, Peter Jecza, Zoltán Molnár, Adalbert Luca or Julius Podlipny. Currently the gallery continues to highlight especially group exhibitions, offering artists the opportunity to exhibit under the patronage of the Union of Artists. In the same time, the gallery is used for the annual contests of the Union and also for external events associated with an institutionalized environment.
