SubREAL
(Călin Dan, Iosif Király,*, București)
SubREAL is considered to be one of the most influential Romanian artistic groups, the first whose work has been internationally recognized. Their art practice explores the trauma, clichés and myths of recent Romanian history.
subREAL is the first truly international group from Romania after the year 1989. Belonging to a generation of transition, the members of the group took the first steps in order to establish a speech with the Western art, transforming the closed culture from which they came into an open one. They have initiated curatorial projects like Mozart's Sex (1991 Artexpo, Bucharest) or Nomadic (1994 Biennale of Sao Paolo) and participated in major international events: Biennial Istanbul, Manifesta 1 Kunsthal Rotterdam (1996), the Berlin Biennale (1998), the Venice Biennale - Aperto (1993) and Romania's Pavilion (1999). They exposed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (1995), Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (1996), Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia (1996), Akademie Schloss Solitude (1998).
