Marcella Beccaria (Chief Curator, Castello di Rivoli, Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Torino)

Curator and writer, since 2012 Marcella Beccaria is Chief Curator at Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, located near Turin, in Northern Italy, where she has conceived and organized a number of projects, exhibitions series, solo and group shows. Major thematic and retrospective exhibitions include Claes Oldenburg Coosje van Bruggen: Sculpture by the Way (2006), A Room of One’s Own (2009), Vito Acconci. Film=Landscape, Video=Close-Up (2010), History I Never Lived through (Indirect Witness) (2012), Marinella Senatore. Building Communities (2013-2014) Jan Dibbets. Another Photography (2014). Her most recent exhibition, Uriel Orlow: Made / Unmade (2015) is currently on view at Castello di Rivoli.

At Castello di Rivoli, she has also initiated several programs and exhibitions’ series devoted to emerging international art, presenting since 2000 projects with artists such as Grazia Toderi, Olafur Eliasson, Alessandra Tesi, Elizabeth Peyton, Hannah Starkey, Paola Pivi, Franz Ackermann, Teresita Fernandez, Anna Gaskell, Francesco Vezzoli, Thomas Demand, Candice Breitz, Yang Fudong, Roberto Cuoghi. She is among the founders of the “Fellowship for Young Italian Artists”, a prize and exhibition series promoting young Italian art.

Beccaria has authored several catalogues, including the first monographs on the work of Roberto Cuoghi, Yang Fudong, Francesco Vezzoli, as well as catalogues on Thomas Demand, Vanessa Beecroft and Gianni Colombo. Beccaria has written extensively on the Castello’s collections, editing several guides to the museum permanent collection and to its artists’ videos holdings.

Prior to the Castello di Rivoli, Beccaria worked at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, where she collaborated on major exhibitions such as Inside the Visible (1996), Gothic (1997) and Familiar Places (1995). She has published with a number of international institutions, including La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Italy; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museu Serralves, Porto; University of Salamanca, Spain; Stedelijk Museum, Gent; Biennale of Istanbul; Kunstmuseum Winterthur; Fondazione Merz, Turin; FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims; De Vleeshal, Middelburg; SAM-Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Gowett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zeland. Additional recent publications include a monograph on Olafur Eliasson published by Tate Modern, London (2013).

Marcella Beccaria holds an M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from Boston University, Boston and she has studied at the University of Turin, Italy.
